Detour - Immersive Audio Tours App Reviews

Best app on my phone

This app is the future. Quality is as good as a This American Life episode, except that, you know, youre actually wandering through places. Detour makes you visits parts of the cities you never went to. The bests Ive done are "Hassidic Williamsburg" (NYC) and the "Illegal Paris" (Paris).

Wandering around Austin

The narrator was awesome! However...Was enjoying the stench of the river and ancient death, And all things are going well until I got to the part about Saint Davids Church, and the whole thing went silent on me. I cant find anymore after that! Does it need help? Do I need help? Its silent.

So much fun!!

This app is great. I had a blast going on the Austin, Tx Detour. I strongly recommend it. Ive lived in Austin for 5 years and I did not know this story. Great for a date, go when there is light out for safety

Best Travel Guide Ever!!!

Did Cool Grey City in San Francisco. Loved it, cant wait to do the rest of that bundle. Great Value.

Cultural Rich and Stunning

If you love podcast, exploring new cities with headphones with your favorite tunes playing, and want to see things the majority of locals dont know than you will absolutely love Detour! In SF, I was taken to hide rooftops, secret bank vaults, history museums, and treated to the most amazing views and bites to eat. That is simplifying it to the extreme. The recent improvements have made it even better. I would rate this 9.5/10 if I could! I find myself planning trips to the new, expanded cities just to experience these geoguided tours.

A phenomenal way to explore a city!

I cannot say enough good things about this app. My husband and I were visiting San Francisco and one of our tour guides told us about Detour. We immediately downloaded it and began with the Haight-Ashbury tour. The tours give you information that you wouldnt hear on other tours. The narration is spectacular. Combine that with the music and you feel like Detour has taken you back in time to show you what places really were like. I love how they advise you to get a drink in a bar or ask for a book in a bookshop. These tours feel like little adventures. I will recommend this app to anyone I know coming to SF. I really hope Detour continues to add tours for other cities. I would even love to do it in my own city! I will be looking for them everywhere we go!

Muy Bueno

I ran out of superlatives to heap upon this app so I had to start again in Spanish.

Magnificent app beautifully executed

Ive traveled this world for 30 years wishing someone would invent this app and rid the world of the tyranny of the Michelin Guide and its ilk. Walking through historic sites, guide book in hand trying to figure out just where the hell you are. Your meager reward - a dry, lifeless recitation of random facts and dates, utterly bereft of life and context. The world is filled with brilliant stories of people who have come before. Finally an app that lets you tell those stories as you walk in their very footsteps. Elegant. Seamless. Beautifully executed. Well done Andrew. Thank you!

An Active Dialogue With History

Amazing. I took a couple of tours in San Francisco, and they were simply fantastic. This app allows you to feel and see history all around you. I cant wait till the New York tours are all released, so I can learn more about the place I call home. I completely recommend this app to any and everyone. Should be in every major city.

Detour Review

My wife and I traveled a lot and we discovered Detour over a year ago while visiting Austin for SXSW. Since then, every time we go to a different city we check to see if Detour has a story for that location. So far we have added Paris, Barcelona and London to our list! The stories are well written and let you discover a different side of each city which we would have most likely missed otherwise. In addition to the cultural enrichment, it is also a great exercise and a nice way to share something unique with your friends or family. Highly recommended - I see that they added Marrakesh, I guess I know where we are going next!

Brilliantly Immersive

The sound design and conversational tones, along with well-chosen historical audio clips truly brings the architecture and the events that have occurred in them vibrantly and, in the case of the Beatnik SF tour, poetically to life. I definitely plan to do these tours every time I travel, and Ive heartily recommended this app to friends around the world. Im eagerly awaiting the completion of LA!

Detour is a great experience

I really enjoyed the Detour experience. I thought the screen pictures of topic were a great touch. I think the picture quality is great. The building pictures help orient me to the right spot. The historical pictures provided visual context to the narration. I decided on Cool Gray City because it was on my way home from work. I like the timeline features that show duration, miles and steps. I think the tips and hints feature is a great touch. I thought Gary did a great job narrating the tour. He used simple to understand words and his enthusiasm and love for the city showed. I also listened to the Fishermans Wharf Detour and was surprised to go to new places that I had completely overlooked the dozen of times I had been there before. So far Detour has exceeded my expectations

Fantastic

If youre ready for a City audio tour in English then this is the best you can get.

Great experience !

I took a Detour in Berlin (Ungovernable Kreuzberg) and it was great. The app works really well, and really allows a rich experience. I strongly recommend the try!

Amazing!

I wish that I could find Detours for all the places I visit. And I wish batteries also could hold longer.

Amazing!

I took the audio tour in Austin. The story was super interesting and the way the audio tour was set up was so cool! You got to see a lot of the city you wouldnt have otherwise. The App itself is really beautiful, too!

Incredibly impressive

Went on some of the San Fran tours and was impressed at the quality of the content. It felt as if there was a live tour guide there. The app interface is really nice and group mode works flawlessly. Really enjoyed how it felt like augmented reality. 10/10

Great!

I think this is an excellent app and its perfect for people who think visiting typical tourist destinations is an inauthentic experience but still want to see what the fuss is about. Its fairly easy to use after you play around with it a bit. I think that some simple improvements would be to include the approximate distance covered by the tour, not just the time, and to allow for a view a map of the whole trip while on it, not just the very next destination. Overall, Im super happy with this app and totally recommend that you get it! Ive used the "Fishermans Wharf" and "Cold, Grey, City" tours and plan on using the other SF ones if we have time. It gives you background info, provides photos and uses your GPS location to pause and restart the tour based on where you are. As someone who loves podcasts, especially those with a storytelling aspect, Detour is perfect.

The tourguide who stops for coffee with you

While the material available is limited to a few cities so far (Sept 2015), the production values are high and the content is excellent. Very easy to use (from my admittedly tech-adept viewpoint), gave me context for the city I was wandering around without disrupting my experience or requiring me to change pace for a shambling your group (or conversely speed to catch up if I lingered somewhere or stopped for a snack). Had no issues downloading episodes on the hotel wifi and then wandering around with cell and data service turned off (gps alone is passive and can function without using cellular data, it is just slightly less accurate in that mode), which was very handy given extortionate roaming contracts. Would suggest looking at the map for each tour so as to cache the map locally to refer to later if you need it.

memorable afternoon walk in Oakland

We live along the Framblo route in Oakland, and decided to spend the afternoon seeing things from her perspective. We loved noticing new details around the neighborhood, and getting lost in a lively, sensory experience. We are looking forward to taking the Panthers Oakland tour next, and diving more into historical content.
