such a fun way to learn about the city

My thoughts about the Detour app: -I heard about Detour through someone I met at a Creative Morning Field Trip. -I chose "Cool Gray City" because its close to where I live in SF, and its fun to learn about neighborhoods that are in my backyard. -Overall, I loved the Detour. I had a couple of friends in town - it was a perfect activity to do with them on their last day here. -The tour was so well done - all instructions were clear, I never got lost and the detailed GPS directions were awesome. -Loved learning some fun facts about the city from a local. -Our guide was very engaging and I love how he personalized the tour (I think he even told us the street he lives on!). -The lunch time suggestion is my favorite deli in North Beach, so I enjoyed how he encouraged us to stop there. We totally did, and ate our lunch at Coit Tower.

Worked well for us

We loved it. We live near the Ladies. Wondered if wed learn more. We did. We learned a few more things. Loved how we could compare a screen picture to what we were looking at. Heard about it on the web I think. Not sure. We both liked the music and the way we could sync with a friend. We would add longer stretches of music from the period. We would point out more things. Twice as many. Like we were on Alamo Square with amazing views. We could have been directed to see the 5 or ten biggest buildings etc. we were looking downtown. And all around anyway. Less of us going I wonder what that building is? When it ended we were about 5 blocks from where we started. Would be better to walk us back or orient us back to the Main Street and tell us just turn here and go 5 blocks and youll be back where we started. Loved her voice. Felt casual and comfortable. Doable. We will do 1 each Sunday. When we have friends visit well point out more stuff. Id suggest you do too. We found it a lot of fun. Good job.

Great Way to Tour the City

I did 4 detours in San Francisco in February 2016. Im from Denver and Im visiting San Francisco while my wife is in meetings. I was looking for ways to walk the area and get information as I went. I didnt want to be tied down to group walks. I really enjoyed the "Architecture" detour. It was compact, very informative and took me to places (roof gardens, bank basements) that I would not have found. It could have gone on longer for me. The "Beat Generation" detour was more rangy. This would have been difficult for someone in marginal health. Im 61 years old and was able to walk the hills, but for many it would have been a challenge. There were a few points along the way where the order of the stopping points didnt make sense, You could have stopped at Russell Court, then gone to Lombard street and then described the movie scene, then the Alcatraz view. Getting off at Lombard, walking down to Russell and then back up again was confusing. The music and poetry readings while walking were great. I would try to keep the dead space to a minimum. I did the "Painted Ladies and Beyond" today. There was much about this area that I didnt know. The walk up Fillmore was very interesting. The topic is difficult but handled well. The Jim Jones part of the story was quite a surprize. This is not the most scenic part of SF, but interesting. I thought the tour might have included more of the architecture of this area, especially the Victorians and Edwardians in the area. I had some technical difficulty at the end of the tour. I lost the location and couldnt pick up the every end of the tour. Not sure what happened. I also did the "Castro" detour. Fascinating. This was the best tour guide, perhaps because of who he is and how he lived through the history of this area. Funny, friendly, heartbreaking, historic. Glad I did this one. We are going to Berlin in June 2016. Im hoping the Berlin tours will be ready by then.

Really Cool App to Learn/Discover New Places

These tours are addicting. My gf and I have already done three in San Francisco. Its a great way to learn about the history of the city and discover some places you didnt know about. Cant wait to try this in New York.

Awesome

Such a great way to get to know a city.

A++++

This is the first app review I have ever made and I just had too because this is such a cool service. Its like hyper-local podcasting on steroids. Can wait till they open up the platform for other creators around the world.

Detour- Architecture in San Francisco

The Detour was such a pleasant surprise. I was not expecting such an inspiring and thought provoking tour. The detour was anything but generic, with the tour guide being super personable and knowledgable. I will definitely use detour again on future travels.

Brilliant!!

Just enjoyed my first walk with this app and it was wonderful! I purchased Detour! As a way to reacquaint with San Francisco after living out of state for many years. My sister and I chose the Architecture walk because it was close to BART (we live in Walnut Creek) and it was fairly short (1 hr). Our impression? In short, fantastic!!! We learned so much, saw so many places we never knew existed and just plain had fun together. Since sis doesnt have a smart phone we shared headphones which was both silly and fun. Rick Evans enthusiasm for this part of SF is clearly evident in this walk and translates well to this medium. We cant wait to explore more Popos in town and engage in our next Detour adventure! Thanks for a great app!!

Awesome Way to Explore a City

After much anticipation, my first Detour definitely exceeded my expectations. We loved the high production quality, the photo supplements, the narration skills of the guide, and how tactfully paced it was. For 2 people that are both UX designers by day, we were both pretty blown away by how well done the experience was and excited to do more. If youre in SF, Cool Grey City was excellent.

Best Audio Tours in the world.

I would listen to these as a fantastic podcast even if I wasnt able to take advantage of the super cool location based guide!

In depth, engaging and fascinating stories

Love detour!! Ive learned so much about San Francisco and met some amazing characters along the way. It feels like a real insider tour of places and communities I otherwise would never have access to. Also fun for groups!

Loved exploring San Francisco

There are so many areas to explore in San Francisco. Detour is helping me see the city from a different perspective. Highly recommended!

Amazing

Ive taken 13 of the 16 Detours in SF. Cant recommend Detour enough. If you live in the area. Take them all. If you only have a limited amount of time, I would suggest: Haight Ashbury, Cool gray city, Castro, Beat Generation. The best entertainment value Ive ever had that wasnt free.

Awesome!!

Love this, so much fun to do with friends synced via Bluetooth.

Amazing!!!!

This app is amazing. I used it for several tours in San Francisco, and it was fantastic. I love walking tours, and have done many tours in many cities with live guides, self-guided books, and audio tours. This app blows them all away. The content is top notch, and The user experience is well designed. Absolutely worth the money, and probably several times the money.

Big Fun

I heard about Detour from a friend whod previously taken the Radiolab Austin Detour, which is the same tour I completed on Friday. The tour itself blew my expectations out of the water - the production quality, the story itself and the integration with local businesses/attractions was fantastic. The only thing you could be better would be MORE tours in Austin! Im excited for more and plan to take the tour again when my family comes to visit.

Great day for a stroll

This is the second Detour tour my sister and I have done and we really enjoyed your guide. We took the "Fishermans Wharf" tour because we had a toddler and stroller. The pace and information were perfect for our stroll. I grew up in the bay area and spent a lot of time visiting your tour destinations. Now I can discover the secrets we missed in those explorations. The first tour we did was the Architectural tour and we really found the information interesting. We will definitely be doing more of them. We are spreading Detour app info to all of our friends

Fantastic!

This app blew our hair back. The tour was interesting and fun, well organized, informative and entertaining. The app itself looks great, is functional and well designed. We had considered doing a hop on/hop off bus tour but instead we all downloaded it and used the sync feature - definitely the better choice. Thank you for your hard work and attention to detail.

Austin De tour

It was a very intense, immersive and unique expirience. It was like a 4-D movie or almost an RPG game with smell and touch. I wish I could do one every day. I chose the Austin detour because I heard about it on RadioLab and wanted to do it. A friend of mine had already done it and took me to do it. Also, I live close to Austin. However, now I want to do another and travel just for Detour. I thought it was going to be like a simple tour, but the story made it feel like I was a part of it. I”m interested in collaborating in bringing a Detour to San Antonio, Texas. I feel there could be ways to make it even more interactive to the level of a game or scavenger hunt.

Really well designed app

I’ve been working through each of the tours, and am constantly impressed by how well the Detours are GPS-integrated and the personal touch that the narrators bring. Highly recommended!
