Pros and cons of Detour - Immersive Audio Tours app for iPhone and iPad
Detour - Immersive Audio Tours app good for
This app is the future. Quality is as good as a This American Life episode, except that, you know, youre actually wandering through places. Detour makes you visits parts of the cities you never went to. The bests Ive done are "Hassidic Williamsburg" (NYC) and the "Illegal Paris" (Paris).
The narrator was awesome! However...Was enjoying the stench of the river and ancient death, And all things are going well until I got to the part about Saint Davids Church, and the whole thing went silent on me. I cant find anymore after that! Does it need help? Do I need help? Its silent.
This app is great. I had a blast going on the Austin, Tx Detour. I strongly recommend it. Ive lived in Austin for 5 years and I did not know this story. Great for a date, go when there is light out for safety
Did Cool Grey City in San Francisco. Loved it, cant wait to do the rest of that bundle. Great Value.
If you love podcast, exploring new cities with headphones with your favorite tunes playing, and want to see things the majority of locals dont know than you will absolutely love Detour! In SF, I was taken to hide rooftops, secret bank vaults, history museums, and treated to the most amazing views and bites to eat. That is simplifying it to the extreme.
The recent improvements have made it even better.
I would rate this 9.5/10 if I could! I find myself planning trips to the new, expanded cities just to experience these geoguided tours.
I cannot say enough good things about this app. My husband and I were visiting San Francisco and one of our tour guides told us about Detour. We immediately downloaded it and began with the Haight-Ashbury tour. The tours give you information that you wouldnt hear on other tours. The narration is spectacular. Combine that with the music and you feel like Detour has taken you back in time to show you what places really were like. I love how they advise you to get a drink in a bar or ask for a book in a bookshop. These tours feel like little adventures. I will recommend this app to anyone I know coming to SF. I really hope Detour continues to add tours for other cities. I would even love to do it in my own city! I will be looking for them everywhere we go!
Some bad moments
I was looking forward to checking this out after seeing a review in the chronicle this morning but the app crashes as soon as I open it
Austin is good - I live here - but a warning about the summer heat is missing. PLEASE add Florence and Prague, but especially Florence. You cant take a bus tour there.
Detours are incredible experiences. Intimate, curated, surprising. Try it!
Spectacular. Exceeded my expectations by light years. Im officially wowed. Cannot wait until there are more NYC options. Thank you!
The Tenderloin detour was AWESOME. I did it with 2 friends and we chose it because it was relatively close to our office, the optimal hours were during working hours, and its an interesting part of the city we dont typically spend much time in. I thought it was really well done – it felt like the narrators were with us. When we went into St. Boniface Church and she said "dont worry, youre with me" it was very comforting! I can’t wait to explore other parts of the city with Detour.
I was expecting just another audio tour of The Castro with brief historical vignettes along the way but the narrative was so captivating and personal that I felt like I had gone through something completely immersive at the end. There was a moment along the tour where my friend and I were looking at Jane Warner Plaza listening to a description of a candlelit march where we felt slight feelings of sorrow but I felt conflicted and somewhat amused by the country line dancers performing in front of me.
Havent stopped talking about the experience with others ever since. Looking forward to checking out the Tenderloin next.
